Define your personal brand – what do you want to be known for in your career?
As a leader in my field, I strive to be known as one of the emerging leaders in leadership development. I prioritise leadership growth and seek to make an impact on my field through my values-based leadership style. My goal is to leverage the unique skill sets that I have acquired from both my education and professional experience, so that I can provide guidance to others and empower them with the tools needed to reach their leadership objectives. I will continue to expand my leadership skills by taking on more challenges and tasks so that I am continuously increasing the value of my personal brand.
Develop a strong network of mentors, colleagues, and friends who can support and advise you
Establishing a strong leadership network is essential in today’s world, as the emerging leaders of our society are in dire need of guidance and support. Through the cultivation of meaningful relationships, both professional and personal, we can all benefit from each other’s leadership growth. Having mentors, colleagues, and friends who can offer advice and evaluate our work allows us to identify challenges more effectively, leverage more resources to solutions more efficiently, and ultimately become better versions of ourselves. By forming a strong leadership network with people we trust and admire, we are equally giving of what we have to offer right back which makes for an invaluable asset.
Be proactive in your career development – don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, seek them out
Building leadership and career growth is predicated on being proactive. Don’t wait around for the next opportunity to arise; seek it out aggressively. There are so many leadership opportunities available in modern life, whether that’s within a company, organisation or association. Developing leadership capabilities and gaining leadership experience can be done in numerous ways. Take on leadership roles, mentor and coach others and take part in team-building activities. If you’re looking for an additional leadership challenge try joining an emerging leaders program that typically involves leadership training such as business communication, presentation skills workshops etc. These experiences will help foster leadership growth resulting in better job satisfaction and improved career prospects.
Be confident in your abilities and don’t be afraid to take risks
It has been said that leadership is not a static quality, it can grow and develop over time. For emerging leaders, this means that they must be confident in their abilities and not be afraid to take risks. Doing so can help them to better understand themselves and gain the insight needed to make leadership decisions with strength, focus and clarity. Taking risks also encourages leadership growth which leads to greater contributions within their team or organisation. To be a successful leader it’s important to build on confidence in one’s own strengths while also recognizing areas where improvements can be made.
Persevere through setbacks and learn from your mistakes
It is important for leadership growth that emerging leaders never give up in the face of setbacks. Although mistakes are inevitable, it is essential to learn from those mistakes and use them as an opportunity for growth. Adopting this mentality will help build perseverance and leadership skills as well as stimulate creative problem solving and success in future leadership roles. As long as we persist through tough times by applying objectivity, experience and insight into our decision making process we can overcome setbacks and ultimately grow exponentially.
Always continue learning and growing as a professional
Professional development is a key leadership element, and it’s important to always be striving for leadership growth. Professionals have the opportunity to proactively pursue education and experiences that will not only further their career, but also benefit those they work with. The emerging leaders in any field understand how important it is to continue learning and developing as a professional in order to stay current, become more efficient, and let their leadership qualities shine through. By embracing this challenge of growth we find ourselves simultaneously setting an example for others of what leadership is really about.
“As you seek to define and grow your career through the development of your personal brand, it’s important to find the right balance between risk-taking and using your experiences as learning opportunities. Having a strong network of mentors, colleagues and friends can provide support, advice and encouraging words of wisdom when needed. When feeling overwhelmed or unsure about how to move forward, taking a proactive approach will never steer you wrong. Despite any setbacks that come your way, it’s important to remember the value in persisting and persevering throughout the journey. Keeping an open mind and learning all you can along the way will help you reach success in both the short-term and long-term – always strive for a higher level of achievement! “
